Industrial Engineering is the North American term for the combination of skills required for Business Efficiency Improvement Work - in the UK the best known terms are Work Study Engineering (the term generally applied to industrial, manufacturing and engineering environments) and Organisation & Methods, sometimes abbreviated to 'O&M' (generally the term used to cover the application of similar skills in commercial environments more reliant upon office-based work, such as the financial sector and the administration aspects of ALL organisations).  These days, the 'BUZZ' words for some of my skills are Process Mapping and Business Process Re-Engineering.  I use flow charting techniques using tools such as VISIO and MSProject in one form or another on virtually every project that I undertake.

I continue to provide my services in these areas, when requested.  Sadly, Industrial Engineering skills are used less often these days, to the detriment of UK industry and particularly manufacturing.  Very few traditional, Industrial or Work Study Engineers now exist and are a 'dying breed'.

The use of NEW terms and techniques such as Quality Management and Business Process Engineering have come into play over the last 15 years but do NOT generally call upon the more scientific and logical approach required by the very well established and PROVEN industrial engineering profession.
